Phonics – Little Wandle
At Padiham Green, we develop confident readers and writers by giving children strong foundations in phonics from the very beginning.
At Padiham Green, we believe that all pupils can become fluent, confident readers and writers. We want children to develop a love of reading from the very beginning and experience success as they learn to read independently.
We teach early reading through Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised, a validated systematic synthetic phonics programme. Phonics teaching begins in Reception and follows a carefully sequenced progression, enabling children to build their knowledge of sounds and the letters that represent them and apply this knowledge when reading and spelling.
Children are taught phonics through daily, focused sessions, where they learn new sounds and regularly revisit and practise previous learning. Children are encouraged to blend sounds to read words and segment words to support their spelling, building accuracy and confidence over time.
Reading practice is an important part of our phonics provision. Children read books that are carefully matched to the sounds they know, giving them opportunities to apply their phonics knowledge successfully and develop increasing accuracy, fluency and understanding.
Children who need additional support are identified quickly and receive targeted support and additional practice, helping them to keep up with their peers and develop the secure foundations they need for future reading and writing.
Ultimately, we want every child to develop the phonics knowledge, fluency and confidence they need to become successful, independent readers and to develop a lifelong love of reading.
