Linguists at Padiham Green listen, speak, read and write in French while discovering a new language and culture.
At Padiham Green, we want children to develop confidence, curiosity and enjoyment in learning a new language and to discover how learning French can help them communicate with others and understand the wider world.
Our French curriculum is rooted in the National Curriculum for Languages and is supported by the Twinkl PlanIt French scheme, which we use to ensure learning is carefully sequenced and progressive throughout Key Stage 2. Children develop their speaking, listening, reading and writing, alongside an increasing understanding of French vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation.
As children move through school, they learn to think and work as linguists. They listen carefully, practise and reproduce sounds, build and recall vocabulary, take part in conversations, read increasingly familiar language and communicate their own ideas through spoken and written French.
Learning French also gives children opportunities to explore French culture and ways of life. Through language and cultural learning, children develop an appreciation of similarities and differences between their own experiences and those of others, encouraging curiosity and respect for the wider world.
We want children to feel confident to have a go at communicating in another language, recognising that making mistakes, listening carefully and practising regularly are all important parts of becoming a successful language learner.
Ultimately, we want our children to leave Padiham Green with a positive attitude towards language learning, secure foundations in French and the confidence to continue developing their language skills at secondary school and beyond.
